Painting Drawing Channel Homework Clip

The Draw > Channels sub-palette has controls for how new drawing affects or reacts to pixols already on the canvas.

Draw > Channels sub-palette

Infront

The Infront and Behind buttons affect the way new paint and objects are applied to pixols already on the canvas. The Infront button, if pressed, specifies that only new surfaces which fall in front of existing pixols are drawn. The Behind button, if pressed, specifies that only new surfaces which fall behind existing pixols are drawn (overriding the existing pixols). The ZADD, ZSUB and ZCUT buttons set these two buttons automatically. ZADD presses the Infront button and un-presses the Behind button; ZSUB un-presses Infront and presses Behind; ZCUT presses both buttons. If both buttons are un-pressed, all new surfaces are drawn, completely overriding existing pixols.

Behind

The Infront and Behind buttons affect the way new paint and objects are applied to pixols already on the canvas. The Behind button, if pressed, specifies that only new surfaces which fall behind existing pixols are drawn (overriding the existing pixols).

R

The Red, Green and Blue Channel buttons affect the way new pixols over-write color information onto existing ones. When these buttons are un-pressed, the corresponding color channels always remain unchanged.

G

The Red, Green and Blue Channel buttons affect the way new pixols over-write color information onto existing ones. When these buttons are un-pressed, the corresponding color channels always remain unchanged.

B

The Red, Green and Blue Channel buttons affect the way new pixols over-write color information onto existing ones. When these buttons are un-pressed, the corresponding color channels always remain unchanged.

Z Tolerance

The Z Tolerance slider determines the Z-axis distance beyond which certain tools (such as color-correction brushes) have no impact on existing pixols. Pixols which are beyond this distance are not affected, even if the cursor moves near them and the Draw Size radius falls on top of them. This slider can help you make use of pixol depth to mask painting actions. If this slider is set to 0, its effect is disabled completely.

Mat Overwrite

The Material Overwrite slider affects the way material information is applied to existing pixols, and is used by tools which use Alphas to define their shapes (i.e., non-3D tools). When painting material information onto existing pixols, you can specify that only lighter portions of the Alpha cause material to be over-written. This slider determines the minimum intensity above which a portion of the Alpha writes new material information. For example, if this slider is set to 50, any portion of the Alpha which is darker than 50% gray will not write new material information.
